Water Damage
What to Do in the First Hour After Water Damage
By Cleaner Guys · · 5 min read
Whether it's a burst pipe, a failed water heater, or an overflowing dishwasher, the first hour after water damage sets the tone for the entire recovery. Quick, calm action limits damage and keeps your insurance claim strong.
1. Stop the source and stay safe
Shut off the main water valve if the leak comes from plumbing. If water is near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, turn off power at the breaker only if you can do so from a dry location.
2. Document everything before cleanup
Take photos and video of standing water, wet flooring, damaged furniture, and the source of the leak. This documentation is the foundation of your insurance claim.
3. Move valuables and remove standing water
Do what you safely can while you wait for help:
- Move electronics, documents, and photos to a dry room
- Place foil or wood blocks under furniture legs
- Mop or towel up small amounts of clean water
- Open windows if the outdoor air is drier than inside
4. Call a professional within 24 hours
Mold can begin to grow within 24–48 hours. Professional extraction, moisture mapping, and commercial drying equipment remove hidden moisture inside walls and subfloors that fans alone can't reach.
