Water Damage

Frozen Pipe Prevention: Get Ready Before the First Freeze

By Cleaner Guys · · 4 min read

When water freezes it expands, putting pressure on pipes until they crack. Pipes in exterior walls, garages, attics, and crawl spaces are most at risk.

Simple prevention steps

  • Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves
  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses
  • Shut off and drain outdoor spigots or install frost-free hose bibs
  • Keep the thermostat steady, even when you're away
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during cold snaps

If a pipe bursts

Shut off the main water valve immediately, turn off electricity to affected areas if safe, and call for emergency water extraction. Fast drying is the key to preventing mold.
