Fire & Smoke
After a House Fire: First Steps Toward Recovery
By Cleaner Guys · · 6 min read
The days after a fire are overwhelming. Focusing on a few key steps can protect your family, your property, and your insurance claim.
Safety first
Don't re-enter until the fire department says it's safe. Fire can weaken floors and roofs, and utilities may need to be inspected before they're turned back on.
Call your insurer and secure the property
Report the loss promptly. Board up openings and tarp the roof to prevent weather damage and unauthorized entry — insurers generally expect reasonable steps to prevent further loss.
What not to do
- Don't wipe soot from walls or upholstery — it can smear and set stains
- Don't run the HVAC system, which can spread soot
- Don't use electronics exposed to heat or water
- Don't eat food exposed to heat, smoke, or soot
Water damage often comes too
Firefighting leaves a lot of water behind. Professional restoration addresses fire, smoke, and water damage together so mold doesn't become a second problem.
